Massachusetts Medicaid covers both cochlear implants for both adults and children under their MassHealth program. Up to 15 speech therapy visits per year are also covered, with more visits subject to prior authorization. Replacement speech processors are covered once every seven years.
Medicaid payment for the procedure has been notoriously low for over a decade. Currently, total is payment is a mere $247.46, by far the lowest in the nation, as compared to total payment of about $60,000 and $30,000 in neighboring states of New York and Connecticut.
State representative James Eldridge (D-Acton) filed a bill in the 2007 legislative session seeking to require Medicaid cover the device, surgery, and post-operative rehabilitation.
