Kentucky statutes at Section 304.17A-131 states that all health benefit plans shall provide coverage for cochlear implants for persons diagnosed with profound hearing impairment. This mandate was effective July 15, 1998.
As a result, Kentucky performs among the highest rates of cochlear implants per capita, with as many as 27 Kentucky residents implanted in 2002.
