CIGNA is one of the largest health plans in the nation. It provides benefits primarily through managed care plans (either health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, or point-of-service plans).

Coverage and payment for cochlear implant services varies according to the requirements of each CIGNA plan, as well as employer-negotiated provisions. However, most CIGNA plans traditionally have provided benefits for the majority of cochlear implant services.

Click here for an example of the cochlear implant policy under one CIGNA plan (in coordination with Lovelace Health Plan) negotiated for the New Mexico Public Schools. As with many private plans, it incorporates the Medicaid and Medicare requirements for coverage of all post-operative training necessry to effectively use the cochlear implant device.
