Cochlear implants are covered under Massachusetts Blue Cross and Blue Shield for adults and children as young as 12 months who are profoundly hearing impaired. This criteria is more restrictive than the FDA, which approves implantation for both profound and severe hearing loss (and is considering expanding coverage for moderate hearing loss.)
